Barcelona In For Berbatov, Real Madrid In For Huntelaar, City to Land Santa Cruz With A Bigger Bid? - Could United End Up Empty-Handed?

Fergie had a twinkle in his eye last weekend, revealing a signing could be imminent and most of the national press yesterday seemed convinced it was due to be announced before the weekend - as early as today in fact.

So where oh where is Dimitar Berbatov?

Well, by the looks of it he’s still training with Spurs and Juande Ramos is accounting for the possibility that he may yet be eligible to feature for Spurs in their trip to The Riverside on Saturday:

‘I will wait until the final training session and see how he is in training, that’s when I will make a decision on that”, the Spaniard said on the matter today.

One suspects that Ramos made that statement in a spirit of pragmatism rather than hope. Behind the scenes David Gill and the Spurs board are engaged in robust negotiations. Hopefully these robust negotiations are more constructive than the press - with its ‘furious Levy this, furious Levy that’ caricature - would have us believe.

But, unbeknownst to Gill, could Levy be engaged in negotiations with a third party ?

Some of the press this evening has re-kindled the rumours that Barcelona may be waiting in the wings ready to pounce should United display any further reluctance to meet the (ever-rising) asking price. Remember that earlier in the summer Tottenham were rumoured to be open to the idea of selling Berbatov to a non-English club at a discount of sorts.

With Real Madrid reputed to be lining up a £20 million bid for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Manchester City mulling over increasing their £12 million bid for Roque Santa Cruz, are United on the cusp of losing out on not one but three of their principal striker targets?

Come on David - if you’re three million short, just ask: and we’ll have a whip round!

I wouldn’t be too worried - I think the berbatov deal will still happen, but only if united make spurs feel like they’ve made a point. United don’t want to risk losing out on him for the sake of 1 or 2 million pounds. The consequences of not getting him in time could be catastrophic - little time to find an alternative.

“Barcelona In For Berbatov” is a complete lie. They have officially announced that Samuel Eto’o stays. Why would they be interested in Berbatov when there’s no room for him?

I must agree with Marc. David Silva rejected Barcelona and sports director Txiki Begiristain said the catalans still want to sign another player but is pretty silly to think they’re after a central striker after Etoo was set to stay on Camp Nou. Thiago Neves and Arshavin may be on the list but Berbator… i dont think so

My, my such a grown up and erudite comment from gcgooner, With his lack of communication skills perhaps he couldn’t find his way to an arsenal site. Perhaps he’s besotted with Spurs or United as he’s on the site with his infantile comments. Must be sad to be a green-eyed bill no mates. there’s a lot of them about on other clubs sites.
