Berbatov To United, Campbell To Tottenham - Win-Win For United

Like half the sites linked to from Newsnow.co.uk we gave up updating our site after several hours yesterday afternoon - the interest in the frenzied goings on of transfer deadline day was massive and so was the internet traffic. So much so that it crashed our site and our hosts weren’t terribly impressed.
Still - we all found out the news we wanted to in the end: Berbatov is a United player at long last.
We’re chuffed, Berbatov is chuffed, Fergie’s chuffed, David Gill is relieved and Daniel Levy is probably all eaten up and bitter even if he did get to borrow Fraizer Campbell for a season.
Even though Berbatov finally made it - despite the deliberately cheeky efforts of Manchester City to scupper our best laid (in fact poorly-laid) plans at the eleventh hour - we’re still left wondering why this wasn’t wrapped up a whole lot sooner.
Some might consider brinkmanship a sensible ploy for cost-conscious businesses, but what did United effectively gain from allowing this saga to run down to the wire? Beyond the acquisition of the player not much - certainly no reduction in cost. In fact all this prevarication served to do was endanger the possibility of the transfer by allowing the Sulaiman-Come-Latelies over at Wastelands to try to piss on our chips.
Levy got his full whack as he had demanded, but with Berbatov sensibly ignoring the last-minute wooing from City, did not get his pound of flesh. He even had to backtrack on his famous dossier - which now will only be remembered as a testament to his own folly.
United paid more than they wanted or can really afford for Berbatov, but frankly, given Levy’s obvious tenacity, should have seen the writing on the wall sooner and coughed up the shekels back in June.
Levy’s vindictive posturing was not without a minor consolation - Fraizer Campbell moves to Spurs on a season long loan. A regrettable concession from United or a masterstroke? Hull were willing to offer £7 million for the youngster. If he proves to be any good for Spurs we can expect to recoup a similar fee next year - who knows, maybe even from Spurs!
What good sport it would be to make Levy sweat over that deal should he want to take the player on permanently….
Anyhow - welcome to United, Dimitar. A club where you can finally realise your talents.
