Third out of the hat for us were Danish team Aalborg BK.
“Who they?”, you ask. As did we.
Well, Aalborg are the 2007-2008 Danish Superliga champions - the third time they have won that honour, adding to their titles in 1995 and 1999. The Danes, managed by former Arsenal boss Bruce Rioch, qualified for the Phase 1 matches of the Champions League by seeing off Modrika 7-1 (agg) in the first qualifying round, before defeating Kaunas 2-0 (agg) in the second qualifying round.
Whereas United have only met Villareal and Celtic once in competitive matches, it’s a big fat zero with Aalborg - this will be our first outing against the Norsemen. Aalborg have played English opposition in European competition, however - meeting Tottenham in the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup competition (losing 3-2)*
Things aren’t looking too fabulous for the Danish champions at the start of their new season - after 5 matches they are 10th in their league of 12 with only 5 points - 8 points behind the leaders OB.
