Delusional Terry: My Strength Of Character Swung It For Me Over Rio

Like many stalwart United fans our interest in the fortunes of the national side comes a very distant second to following our club, so the debate over the award of the England captaincy is of only peripheral concern.

Nonetheless, given the effort he has gone to over the past two years or so to clean up his act and his decent (if not exclusively victorious) performances as captain, it was somewhat surprising to see Terry given the nod over Rio Ferdinand.

Let’s be straight on this - we don’t actually care that much. Really. In the final analysis Capello, who comes from a nation where the issue of who captains the national side isn’t that important, probably gave it to Terry because:

i) he captains his club side.
ii) he shouts more than Rio
iii) he probably picked up on the fact that Terry would be more ‘gutted’ than Rio to discover he hadn’t been selected. Who knows he might have even suspected Terry Tears might turn the waterworks on again.

Terry however, displaying the ridiculous self-importance that virtually all modern football players seem possessed of, believes it was his strength of character that won him the nod:

“I think I showed what kind of character I am to the manager, to come back like I did after that huge disappointment. Maybe that persuaded the manager. It was a boost that he gave me the armband [against the USA]. On the pitch, I played well and scored the goal – it helped.”

In what sense did Terry ‘come back from a huge disappointment, we wonder? Was it meant to be an act of supreme bravery or self-mastery to be handed the captain’s armband for a friendly against a below-strength and barely-motivated minor footballing nation?

And why was the Champions League final such a ‘huge disappointment’ after all? John - it was a football match, albeit a very important, that you lost. Real men, real leaders don’t just gee everyone up when things are going their way. They take the bitter disappointments on the chin and rise above their own personal feelings to lift their team-mates, to put things in perspective.

Like we said, we don’t really give a monkeys about the England captaincy but it’s kind of sickening to hear footballers come out with this self-deluding, narcissistic bollocks.

Someone should probably point out to Terry that a huge disappointment is something of the order of being sent to the other side of the world to fight an illegal and pointless war in the service of your country and get your young body blown to smithereens for your troubles.

You’re quite welcome to shed a few tears for those poor buggers, JT, but we doubt you would.

Terry is a nobkins pure and simple. Like you I’m not that fussed about England but Rio was obviously a better candidate than Teary. Still means that even if England don’t qualify for the next major tournament we’ll have the pleasure of seeing more self obsessed sniffling from brave Teary
