Fergie Fumes Over Terry Let-Off

Sir Alex Ferguson is miffed that John Terry’s red card against Manchester City has been rescinded -and rightly so.
Mark Halsey, the match official at the Man City vs Chelsea match on Saturday, judged that Terry’s blatant and cynical tackle-cum-rugby-tackle constituted serious foul play.
Chelsea disagreed and the FA acquiesced - the red card was rescinded on a technicality. In the FA’s analysis, Halsey’s reasons for dismissing Terry were incorrect - the rugby tackle, whilst cynical, was not excessive or violent and therefore doesn’t correspond to the present criteria for ’serious foul play’.
Nonetheless, all very fishy from a United perspective.
Terry will be back for Chelsea on Sunday and Nemanja Vidic, guilty of two bookable offences last Saturday, will not. The only consolation to be drawn from this: United fans will at least have a chance to taunt the Chelsea captain for his hapless penalty in the Luzhniki back in May.
Not that Ferguson will draw any consolation. The United manager even went so far as to suggest the rescinding of Terry’s red card was a piece of blatant anti-United chicanery from his long-time foe, Keith Hackett (general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMO) - basically an FA quango):
“From what I have heard, Keith Hackett has told the referee to rescind the red card and he wouldn’t do it. If it had been a Manchester United player, Keith Hackett wouldn’t have done this. If the referee has made a mistake, this is going to happen all the time.”
Sir Alex’s irate comments haven’t gone unnoticed.
The FA has immediately retorted that it will investigate Ferguson’s statement and consider whether further action should be taken against the United manager - don’t be surprised to see him watching from the stands along with Vidic on Sunday!
