Man City To Be Taken Over By United (Group For Development…)

After years of satisfying underachievement save the derby debacles of last season, are City set to finally live up to their self-image and become a ‘massive’ club ?
Much to the disgust of those of us who savoured his goal scoring feats at United in the 80’s and 90’s, Mark Hughes took on the City manager’s job in the summer and seems to be making a decent fist of it.
After an opening day mauling at the hands of Aston Villa (who on the evidence of yesterday’s boredom against Liverpool won’t be making a habit of mauling anyone else…). City have romped to three nil victories against West Ham and Sunderland.
It won’t last though, we smirked - with Dr Death at the helm with his frozen assets, City’s progress would conform to their historical norms of overweening ambition and predictable underachievement.
News comes this morning, however, that City may be about to get the kind of financial shot in the arm that could finally make them into a serious team after decades in the wastelands.
According to Sky Sports, Thai owner Shinawatra agreed a deal last night to sell the club to the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development.
Chief executive of Hydra Properties (part of the United Group), Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim, is set to represent the new owners on the board and made clear his ‘massive’ ambitions for the club:
“We will release details later, but this is a great event for both the club and Abu Dhabi. Our goal is very simple - to make Manchester City the biggest club in the Premier League, and to begin with, to finish in the top four this season.”
Are City finally about to become a serious force in English football? Will their cash rich, oil-rich owners leave us pining for a similar Arabian intervention? Or will this be just another false dawn for the Blue Moonies?
