Mind Games Guru John Terry: United Are Past It, Not Chelsea…

Barely a fortnight after his first cack-handed attempts at mind games, wobbly-ankled Champions League Final loser John Terry has had another stab at winding up United.

In an interview published in the Mail, Terry, playing witlessly into the hands of chief-winder-upper Fergie, responded to the accusation that last season’s serial losers were past their peak:

‘I think he (Ferguson) realises we weren’t too far away from them when they were at the very top of their game last season.’

‘I don’t think they’ve got another level to go to. They’ve had a lot of players in their team who have hit the peak of their form in the last two years. Rio’s been awesome in the last two years. Ronaldo’s been unbelievable – I don’t think we’ll ever see that again.’

I think only the most deluded United fan would fail to acknowledge that Chelsea are likely to be far stronger this year. Unless fortune serves them up another nasty roster of injuries and managerial changes, we can expect them to push us all the way. (Ed: so maybe another dazzling Carling Cup victory awaits for them?)

However, and here’s the good bit, the only thing more delusional than thinking Chelsea won’t improve, with the additions of Bosingwa and Deco (and Kaka?), is to imagine United themselves won’t improve further.

Every area of the United team looks re-inforced or improved - not necessarily by marquee signings, but by the accumulation of experience and the addition of a few new names through the ranks.

We have the best defensive back line in the country and can swap in a healthy number of capable replacements for the first choice four if needs be. We have Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves now properly bedded in. Carrick finally maturing into a big game player, the old guard in midfield still defying their age, Rooney due for a big season, Ronaldo back by October and - bet on it - a big name striker to come within the next few days or weeks.

The Champions League final proved that John Terry is more than adept at making a fool of himself. His ill-judged attempts at mind games these past few week are only serving to reinforce that reputation.

Can’t wait for you to come to OT, John. Think we might sing a few songs for you….
