It all seemed to be going swimmingly well 3 minutes in when Berbatov announced his arrival in the United side by setting up last season’s match winner, Carlos Tevez, for the opening goal. Berbatov ran into the right hand side of the box and cut back a perfect cross for the Argentinean to smash past Pepe Reina.
Thereafter, however, the momentum swung to the home side and having earlier made a hash of a cross that nearly allowed Dirk Kuyt to score, the Dutchman served up one of his rare but disastrous clangers - ricocheting a cross onto Wes Brown and into the goal. 1-1.
Liverpool dominated possession in the second half and United had to wait until 70 minutes to craft another decent chance, with Ryan Giggs forcing a great save from Reina with a dipping 30 yard effort.
United were very definitely on the back back foot, however, and the impressive Mascherano crafted a deserved winner for the home team, feeding Kuyt in the box who crossed to Babel. The Dutchman cannoned the ball into the ground and past the melee of United players in the goal.
Vidic was sent off late on for an insane challenge on Alonso - the Serbian not making any semblance of going for the ball. Ferguson will not be happy to have the big man absent for United’s forthcoming European match and the trip to Chelsea.
Even four minutes extra time was not enough for United to find an equalizer. Van der Sar tried to make amends by coming up for a late, late corner. But it was too little too late and Benitez secured his first league victory over Sir Alex.

I could not believed my team lose…
MU condition similiar like last season,3 played 1,1,1 and got 4points
when fergie used 4-3-3 formation i was surprise coz not usual..n that strategy
made MU first loose this season!!!!!!
Sorry, but the game was awful! Where was Rooney! And what the hell were Van der Sar and Giggs doing? Anyway…..it’s over now. Nice site BTW!
