Goalless in Group E: - United’s busy but disjointed start to the season continued with another goalless outing against Villarreal.

Given that United’s previous two meetings again the Spanish side had failed to produce any goals, the gathered Old Trafford throng might have quietly hoped for a glut of sorts to kick-start the season.

It wasn’t to be.
Villarreal were pedestrian in the first half and clearly, only two games into their season, slightly behind the pace of the European champions. Decent chances fell to Ferdinand and Tevez in a first half in which the Spanish side struggled to get out of their own half.

United should have had a penatly five minutes before half time when JS Park was clearly felled in the box - not, however, according to the referee (no doubt not improving SAF’s currently rock-bottom estimation of match officials.)

The visitors improved dramatically in the second period and should have taken the lead when Franco’s cheeky back-heeled flick from Lopez’s cross beat Edwin van der Sar all ends up - only to bounce back into the big Dutchman’s clutches off the far upright.

The highlight of the evening was the return of the prodigal son - Cristiano Ronaldo, who received a rapturous welcome from the selfsame fans who were ready to string him from a lamp-post just months earlier.

The fleet-footed star had a couple of chances to win it for the home side himself and also set up two further chances which ought to have been buried - from Tevez and Jonny Evans, who headed the Portuguese winger’s cross against the foot of the upright.

It’s a disappointment result, of course, having play at home, we do need all 3 points. The only positive thing is that Celtic also failed to win tonight, therefore, it wasn’t too bad.

If Celtic won today, we could be in big trouble. In my opinion today most of our team play really. Nani and Evra combined our effective attack on the left hand side. Hargreves and Fletcher play well in the middle. G. Neville’s form still not as good as he used to be but it’s understandable as this is his first start of the season for him. Ferdinand and Evan play well, but the only downside of tonight match is that we seems don’t know how to score goal to decide the game….

I’ve said before that though in modern game of football goals can come from any player, any position, however, if the team fail to score, the main responsibility will have to go to the striker. From tonight match, again, it’s proved that Rooney is not the same player as he used to be with us in the first season anymore. He has no sharpness, lack of penetration, and above all, has no confidence to take a shot in crucial time. On the 72nd minute is a great example. Ronaldo played a SUPER BALL to Rooney which he must score or at least hit the target. However, Rooney SELFISHLY refuse to take a shot and choose to pass that big responsibility to Tevez which finally failed. If he was the same Rooney (as the first season), he would prefer to shot and I think he will score for us tonight.

We all love United, we all hate to lose, and we all now have to accept that Wayne Rooney is no longer the same player when he first joioned us anymore. His best form has gone, and with his present form, he will never ever be considered as a top class striker. He is very much over valued, and with his present form, SAF will never ever consider to pay 27 million pounds for a striker like this.

Of course, Rooney always run, and work hard. But, what do you expect from a player worth 27 million pounds???….
Playing as a striker but never score???…
Keep saying that I’m not selfish and never score????….
or Keep running and refuse to take responsibility (Take a shot) when the team is need a goal badly???….

I think it’s the right time to drop Rooney. Some may argue that last season we losted many time when Rooney didn’t play. This season, however, we’ve already losted twice (Against Zenit in the Super Cup and against Liverpool which Rooney played full 90 minutes in both matches and didn’t play well at all).

One of the best method to make player realised that his best form has gone and make him to re-discover his form is to put him on the bench. We have Berbatov, Manucho, and Tevez. And with the return of our SUPER RONALDO…. This is the best time to drop Rooney….

totally agree Gazzaro, Given Rooney’s age you would have expected an improvement each year but to me he has gone backwards, he is still a good influential player but I would never rate him has world class. I think when the Berb is fit Rooney should spend time on the bench with Ronny, Tevez and Berba up front, SAF once described Rooney has supper sub when he came off the bench with a strong performance, no one is untouchable ( maybe Ronny ) and maybe it would do more good than harm in the long run for Rooney has a sub.
