It was somewhat hard to credit when the rumours first surfaced late last night - but, it has happened: it has been confirmed this evening that Mikael Silvestre has signed for Arsenal.
Silvestre becomes the first United player since Brian Kidd in 1974 to move from United to Arsenal. Silvestre, who could have totted up a tenth year and a testimonial had he stayed at Old Trafford, was signed by United from Inter Milan in 1999.
Silvestre once famously described Arsenal as too French - clearly his anti-Gallic sentiment has abated over the years and he will join the ranks of his countrymen in Arsenal back line. Wenger has suggested he sees Silvestre primarily as a centre-back as opposed to a left-back - the position he has most often occupied for United over the years.
The news that Wenger has captured Silvestre’s signing will come as a blow to both Mark Hughes and Roy Keane who had expressed an interest in bringing the veteran Frenchman to Manchester City and Sunderland respectively.

clearly wants to win cups
decent bit of business in my eyes, im a gooner and, to be honest. There are only upsides from this move from my point of view, hes experienced, he can head the ball, hes french so hell fit into our defence well as they all speak french he was quick before, he should still be pretty quick, and its reliable cover for toure and gallas as well as Gael Clichy.
i just hope he takes his chance.
What really amazes me is that despite Man United and Arsenal being arch rivals, the two actually are mature and respect each other. If it was Liverpool or Chelsea im sure Fergie would have disagreed (Heinze?). It is good gesture and it shows why these two clubs are the most popular and respected.
he’s joined the better side. no doubt.
im a gooner and am pleased with the transfer.
but my main comment is that rio should have been england captain
I hope he is an improvement on senderos…but being with united for 9 year proves that he a good defender !!!
Im suprised it happened. It’s a good signing for us as a squad player he adds something we certainly lack. Your a good side, although i think we will both loose out to those west London slags. I think we can push all the way. I must say, your squad looks very short considering the noise during the summer and last season. Thats the UK press, Wank3rs. COME ON THE GUNEERS
welcum to be gunner
