“SNAP!”…NOT: Why Tottenham Can’t Do A Ronaldo With Berbatov

Over the weekend, many of the British papers reported that United had lodged a second improved bid (in the region of £25 million) for the transfer of Dimitar Berbatov.
After an impasse of several weeks where it seemed precisely no progress had been made in the deal, to the relief of everyone concerned it seemed the denouement of this pointlessly bitter episode was upon us.
Barely a day after that development was reported we are now led to believe that Spurs are digging their heels in over the £30 million fee and are prepared to let Berbatov ‘rot in the reserves’ if that figure isn’t met.
On the face of it this seems exactly the rhetoric United trotted out when the Ronaldo-to-Real story was at its height. United of course never intended to do anything of the sort and persuaded the reluctant Portuguese player to stay on and keep his trap shut for at least another year, or possibly two.
Regrettably for Spurs that kind of intervention is now an impossibility as far as Berbatov is concerned - whether it might have been possible earlier in the summer is a moot point. What is clear is that Berbatov is even more sold on the idea of leaving than Ronaldo was and has reportedly taken it that crucial step further - by requesting a transfer.
Are Spurs really serious about standing their ground and refusing to sell unless the £30 million fee is reached? It seems so.
Would they seriously force an entirely demotivated and expensive asset to sit in the reserves for the whole season? Surely the daftest kind of spite.
Could they talk him round as United did with Ronaldo and get him playing well for the team again? Very Unlikely - that’s the difference.
Whether it is self-regard, Narcissism, professionalism or just bloody-mindedness, Ronaldo is always going to play to the maximum wherever he turns out. He likes the attention too much not to give his all.
Berbatov on the other hand mopes around at the best of times - even when things are going his way. It’s utterly improbable to imagine that either Poyet or Ramos - who seem to have no great rapport with the player - could motivate him to forget about his ‘dream’.
Spurs should see sense - and United should meet them half way. £27 million or £28 million for a player of Berbatov’s temperament and age is plain daft. But that’s the way the market is and Spurs don’t look like budging very much.
Let’s get it done and put the whole tawdry story to bed - and hope Berbatov bucks up his ideas and his manners if he steps out for us.

Frankly I wonder what we’re letting ourselves in for with this feller. Having watched him over the past couple of seasons its clear to see that he is quality and would bring an extra dimension to our play.
but his attitude stinks just as much as Ronaldo’s. I don’t think Fergie will put up with any sulking though - he’ll soon get that sh1t knocked out of his system if he comes to united
You are welcome to him! Sulky little girl stamping his feet whenever he doesn’t get the ball.
He looks destined to rot we dont need the cash as we have only spent a million net on new players so far this window and as such im sure that there is money left to burn on other options just the usual poor negotiating from our so called sporting director seems to be the issue the fee seems a bargain at 30 mill considering Chelski paid 30 mill for shevchenko and he couldnt hit a barn door if Tevez fee is as stated then you would get a good deal at the asking price maybe its beacuse he may have another dream of spain or italy in a years time that puts your board off the idea and I can see Rooney lumping him one if he behaves towards his team mates as he has done at Spurs good for team spirit …….have fun if you get him moments of brilliance all wrapped up with moments that will drive you to desperation
Berbatov will be the same anywhere if he isn’t getting the service. The sooner he is gone from Spurs the better to be honest.
yeah lets just roll over for the mighty Man United…you would like that wouldn’t you?
To be honest, good on Daniel Levy, let the c*nt rot in the reserves, if your not willing to pay the 30 million then do one.
The valuation is 30 mill, it doesn’t make any sense to let him go for less than that, it would just be a sign of weakness from Spurs.
The guy is on a 4 year contract, its not about spite or pettyness its about you paying what we value him at. You wouldn’t sell your house or your car for less than its valued at would you?
You can’t go around bullying the smaller clubs all the time.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all that United have a hand in Berbatov’s recent sulks. They probably told him to sulk and go on strike to trying get the valuation lowered.
Berbatov is a gentleman. He has a perfect attitude. If you think that clubs fighting only on the grass you are wrong. There is so many war in the media. Everything are just journalist speculations. They want to keep you reading their bullsh!ts and washing your brain. Berbatov never say a word to anyone. The real interview was with Bulgarian newspaper and the words he say are. “Please, don’t ask me any questions - There is a still time till to end of the transfer window - We will see what will happen. I can’t talk about that now.”
Well I agree with your final two sentences which is the only likely way out for all three parties but I findamentally disagree with the assertion that Tottenham are being spiteful or cannot make good on their threats.
This time last year, we had the finest attacking partnership in the Europe; the basis for our future success and the area which, no matter how far we got would always be the focus of our drive to the top of Europe.
ManU over the course of two seasons and Liverpool with their lure of a single season of CL football have set Spurs back an immesurable amount of time. In other business sectors, such moves would be prohibited as anti competitive. Sure it’s good for Liverpool and good for ManU but it is terrible for everyone else and particularly any team hoping of challenging for honours in the future.
Even the most myopic ManU fan should be able to see that if a supporter can no longer hope their team might one day challenge, the game for them dies?
So I say, I hope no bid comes in, or the 28m is rejected and Berbatov and his ilk learn the relentless, monotonous hegemony does not rule all. I know Spurs can afford to let him rot and frankly that’s exactly where he belongs; a rotting example to everyone else that just because you are big and can offer shiny things, it doesn’t mean that everyone else must dance to your tune.
£27m- £30m you can have him… Man Yoo knew the asking price, & have unsettled him via his agent…. They either pay up or shut up!!!!
Was Berbas dream really Man Yoo, if it was why did he sign for them in 2006?
Take the c unt
The difference is Spurs fans wont accept anyone playing for them who obviously doesnt want to be there….unlike Man Untd fans with the winker….Nor would we sing anti England songs…i.e about a guy who wants to go to the second best club in Spain making England look shite!!!
JS, I wholeheartedly agree with your comments. It’s about time that someone took a stance on this type of thing. Why can’t Berbatov just accept thingsa and get on with playing. Gareth Barry seemed to manage it just fine.
From a purely financial propsective spurs CAN afford to say no to a £25million deal. They can’t however afford to lose another quality star to another rival for a bag of peanuts. Will he go to united for £30mil!? YES! ..because Fergie has realized they stand little chance to beating a very strong Chelsea side without him.
If we do sell him , sell him abroad a lot less cheaper than what Man Yoo (alledgedy bid). Remember Heinze deal, wouldn’t sell to Liverpool. Well this is how Spurs should be, no selling to whiskey nose….
I’m pretty sure United will eventually pay the price that Spurs want, because Berbatov could not ever have been acting without anyone behind him when he declared his “mental state” at the weekend. He would not have refused to pull on a Spurs shirt without the assurance of another job waiting for him, somewhere. So, United got him into this mess, and they must be committed to getting him out of it. Or maybe their entire approach, in tandem with Liverpool, was to disrupt Spurs this season and they now intend to drop Berbatov in it. We’ll see. I wouldn’t at all mind him being kept in the reserves.
LET HIM ROT IN RESERVES
Sensible article; £28m is a fair price for a top quality forward. I would be sad to see him go and he would be lethal at ManUtd. He was 6th top scorer and 6th in assists last season and he only tried for 2/3 of the season. His beahvoiur and demenour have been awfull. I no longer want him to play for the club. At least st ManU he might stop Chavski winning the league. Shame we could’t have Heinze as part of the deal.
Incidently, Ronaldo has not been putting in the performances since being ‘talked round’. I believe his injury scuppered his plans. He is a disgrace in the mould of Sol Campbell and Ashely Cole. He is yet to play and will move in the next year, the question is; can he perform at the same level as last year when his heart is set to move elsewhere.
Last word, you may not agree with my thoughts, I dont agree with plenty on here, but most fans (both reds and lillywhites) have made good reasoned arguements. If you can’t express yourself inteligentlyor have terretts; go and play in the sand pit and leave the adults to talk football.
If Utd don’t give a least 28million, I think Spurs should make a point and let him rot. They should not be held to ransom by both United and Berbatov. Time for Spurs to take a stand - like what Villa have done with Barry. Pay the amount and move on. Unlike Barry who still performs and does not mope, Berba should thrown into some reserve games.
Unfortunately, this has been the tactics of the Top 4 clubs to sabotage challenges to their status buy unsettling or buying their most valued assets….
Man U did that successfully, 2 seasons ago with the poaching and buying of Michael Carrick which in my opinion weakened Spurs midfield and altimately cost Spurs champions league.
This season, there have been a two pronged attack from Liverpool and Man U who, seeing the threat from Spurs have unsettled the team by going after their top 2 strikers (Keane and Berbatov).
Berbatov has obviously been compromised by Man U and I would not want them to gain from this deplorable act. I would prefare Spurs move on and get 2 good replacements and let Berbatov stay in the reserves as a lesson to other players and later(January) sell/loan him abroad and not to any Premier league side for even a lesser amount or exchange him for a player in Russia! LOL!!!
Without a clear statement, SPURS will not make the TOP 4 as the top teams will simply buy 2 of your best players every season or unsettle them. At 27, Berbatov is going about issues in the wrong way and SPURS could make life extremely unpleasant for him and his future.
As much as I do not believe in holding players against their will, being disrespectful to your employers and to the fans is something I consider very unprofessional and should be stamped out of the game. Garreth Barry, Adebayor, Ronaldo & Keane behaved appropriately but Berbatov signing a Man U shirt and refusing to play for Spurs takes the issue to another level. A player should play at his best at all time for the club he represents and allow his agent to do the negotiating on his behalf.
I thnk its an excellent move by Levy, it might seem like spite to let berba rot however what it means that he wont let the club be bullied by either the player, his agent or any other club which sets an example to many other clubs in the same positon.
in anycase if manyoo dont buy berba will simply go abroad on a loan deal with a couple of other players coming in the opposite direction….levy will not be defeated!!!!
Look hope you give us the 30 mil, then get the run around by him his agent, and next summer have two players sulking for a move to Madrid..lmfao
The funny/sad thing is: Spurs would probably have let him go for 25m at the start of the summer if Ferguson and co had put in a bid properly and hadn’t acted illegally and been tapping him up for the past 2 years.
same as the Rooney deal, speculate, turn his head and pay on the last day of the transfer window, fergie loves it that way, poor Everton, all the cash for Rooney and no time to spend it, like Bill said 25 mil at the start of the summer you would have got him, hope you never get him now, lol
Can’t decide whether the writer is moronic or just off his face on something. What arrogance to state “Spurs should see sense - and United should meet them half way. £27 million or £28 million” .
Let me get this straight. Berbatov has a valid contract at Spurs. Spurs hold his registration. Spurs have stated a price at which they will sell him. United won’t meet that price. So the ethical and moral way out is for Spurs to give in to the blackmail of both United and Berbatov? Now that seems fair.
Let me also see Spurs are solvent, not in debt and can make their own decisions.
United (i.e. the Glazers ) are in hock to the bankers for £780 million. That gives United the strong financial hand?
Spurs will do football a great service if they stick to their price and send the chiselling Scot away empty handed. I’m sure all neutral and decent fans will cheer at clubs finalling standing their ground against blackmail. In any other walk of life blackmail is a crime and seen as a cowardly one at that.
Apologies for posting under this name if any subscribers find the word difficult to understand!
To be fair to the writer i think he’s not your average sponge-brain manyoo fan and sees the story from both sides. yes we are solvent but having spent 43 million in the summer, getting back another 28 million makes sense. The cnut doesn’t want to play for us and it makes no sense whatsoever to keep in the reserves watching his resale value plummet - get rid of him then kick lumps out of him when they come to the lane in december!
yidrme, we have only spent 1 million net, as we have recouped our expenses by selling robbie, steed, chimpanzee, tainio (at a profit), kaboul, robinson, gardner. Are you forgetting???
As for the situation at hand, I totally disagree with the writer. We are super tottenham from the Lane. We are a BIG club with heritage and history and a name in football. We will NOT let anybody bully us. Levy only allowed the sale of Robbie as it was a dam good one, 20 million ofr a 29 yr old, and look at him at the scousers, early days but he looks kinda lost.
We should remind Berba he is on a contract, and as long as he is mentally unfit, he will be fined his wages, and that he should learn a lesson from the gareth barry book.
Berba to Barca for season long loan deal with view to 20 million transfer next season. Sky Sports News. In Levy we trust
Bertatov - ManU Ronaldo to Real Madrid finally resolved !
A very close friend of Darren Fletcher has said the Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Bertatov to ManU deals will be resolved by an amazing peace pact recently hatched in the last 48 hours. Spurs will get Darren Fletcher for £6.5Million as a much needed defensive midfielder sacrifice, Spurs will then drop the lawsuit and sell Berbatov to Real Madrid for 20 Million to replace Robinho who is being sold to Chelsea for £30 Million, swelling Spurs coffers for much needed striker reinforcements and scuppering any lingering hopes of Ronaldo leaving ManU to go to Real!
Everyone Benefits
Hope it’s true ,
As a spurs fan living in manc i have to say forget the transfer fees etc its sport and competition ……on field and off
i believe you will be blown away by his touches and silky creativity if he goes to you but i believe the press rumours etc are portraying the man as something he may not be
i believe he cannot stand the press merry go round. he is a top draw player who sadly lacks Ronaldos age and ambition..
but is there is a chance it s all rumours and press garble and your SAF is not going to go giving himself headaches by talking about his targets….. never said he wanted him this year and has said he had oppurtunity in 2005….y would he want a 28 yr old who he could of had for 8million,
ill be at old trafford in the prawn sandwich brigade with my company season ticket enjoying the season…..but ill be throwing them at berba god should he end up playing for you .
