So Long Dong - As We Predicted…

Precisely as we predicted in a piece previewing his run out at the Olympics, Dong Fang Zhuo has left Manchester United.
Dong, who signed for United in 2004 from Dalian Shide, spent the majority of his United career on loan at Belgian side Royal Antwerp, where he was something of a hit.
The same, however, couldn’t be said of his United career. When he finally did secure a work permit to play in England in 2006, Dong only mustered three first team appearances - one in a Carling cup defeat to Coventry, one in the Premier League at Chelsea when we had already won the league and one in the Champions League against Roma when we had already qualified beyond the group stages.
When he signed in 2004, to great fanfare, many wondered whether his move was purely a marketing exercise or whether United had blazed a trail to find the first genuine Chinese football superstar.
Clearly he was neither and United have agreed to cancel his contract by mutual consent.
So long Dong!
