Squeaky Berbatov Time For United: Tottenham Stand Their Ground

Five days to go before the transfer window bangs shut and Fergie still hasn’t gotten his man. Has the wily old fox left it too late to persuade Spurs to part with Dimitar Berbatov?

On the face of it things don’t look overly promising for United’s chances of securing the transfer of the Bulgarian.

Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy, much to the pride of the team’s fans, is refusing to budge on his demands that United cough up the full asking price of £30 million for Berbatov.

United may have hoped the arrival at the Lane of Roman Pavyluchenko (subject to visa approval) would soften Spur’s position on the release of Berbatov.

This doesn’t appear to be the case, however, as Pavyluchenko has been earmarked as a replacment not for the moody Bulgarian, but for Robbie Keane, now plying his trade fruitlessly at Liverpool.

Tottenham are almost certainly in the market for another striking option and the Andrei Arshavin rumours don’t look like disappearing any time soon, even though the diminutive Russian is travelling with Zenit St Petersburg to Monaco for the UEFA Super Cup Final against United tomorrow evening.

If Spurs are planning to sign Arshavin they will be cutting it very fine and if Arshavin is the lynchpin in the Berbatov deal then United may be forced to cut it even finer with Berbatov.

Then again - Levy may surprise us all and deliver a sucker punch to both United and the player - by consigning him to the reserves until the next transfer window at least, as he has threatened.

the more i think about this the more convinced i am we should have spent the money elsewhere. 15 million at the start of the season could have got santa cruz who doesn’t have the finesse of berbatov obviously, but he scores plenty of goals and provides aerial presence. We could have then spent any remaining (unlikely) money on another player.

berbatov is a fantastic player but i doubt even the fergie hairdryer can get berbatov to smile and put in a bit more effort when things aren;t going well…

Word has it that Levy is gonna loan him out to Real for a year with an option to buy at the end. This gets the sulky git away from the Lane without bending over to sir rednose. What we at spurs call a win win situation. Not that we know much about that after starting the season lose lose.

Chevski’s money to Real will finance a deal for Berba that will see him move there. CL final to be those two teams this year with ManUre being knocked out in the semis. Tough on Sir Red Nose who will look back on the fact that the poor skint, up to their eyes in debt and interest payements ManUre could not sell enough team pictures, key rings and toilet paper to finance the deal. PS It was Berba’s brace for Real that knocked you guys out!

It’s easy to be critical after an event… that way you can never be proved wrong.
Maybe Spurs were naive to think Berbatov would remain professional and if they didn’t get the right price they could hold on to him. Similar to Aston Villa’s stance with Gareth Barry and Liverpool. If Spurs had let him go for £15m at the start of the season the fans would have gone mental due to their lack of fight and ambition.

It is no good saying ” if ” when a decision still has to be made.
    The decisions are these:
1: Accept less than £30m for a sulky star and sell him to Man Utd.
2: Stay strong stick him in the reserves and take less than £25m in the next window. Maybe, if your lucky, not selling him to Man Utd to prove a point.
    3. Kiss goodbye to any transfer money and stick him in the reserves till his contract runs out.

Personally I like options 2 & 3… but can Spurs afford to do this? Have we got enough money in the kitty to secure Berb’s replacement first?

i doubt santa cruz was ever available for £15m. Bentley cost more than that and goal scorers are always at a premium.

spurs have plenty of money our net outlay this summer is £0 all incoming transfers so far have been paid for by outgoings. we are usually in the top 15 richest clubs in europe and unlike all of the top 4 have 0 debt. so we don’t need any money to fund further player aquisitions.

i think utd should pay the money, they aint spent much if anything over this summer and he is exactly what they need. he will score 20+ goals a season probably get at least that many assists. he offers aerial power which none of their current strikers have and his touch and vision are 2nd to none.

i keep hearing that £30m is too much but he is in the top 3 strikers in world football (check his international goals to apps ratio) plus he is proven in the prem where none of the other supposed targets are. you get what you pay for, if you want top draw you pay top price. he is better than anything they currently have so if they want to improve they need to get the deal done.

Top response joker! Tevez who cost £32m is nowhere near as good Berbatov. Granted he works his socks off. But does he have the vision, the sublime skill and the goal prowess of Berbatov. The answer is an emphatic no. That player will never get you 30+ goals a season. Berbatov, when his mind is focused will. He got 23 goals last season. Between August and Christmas he only netted 4. Can you imagine how many goals Berbatov will get if he played the whole season! If Tevez is worth £32m then Berbatov is worth £40m. Utd know that, but they want him so badly they’re trying to drive the price down cos they got no money.

Spurs over all are one of the most financially secure teams in the country. Levy can afford to play hardball as long as he wants. Rudolph taps Berbs up and claims that “we’re in a strong position” the arrogant knob. No you’re not; you’re in a weak position. So pay up or toddle off and get a cheapo striker.

  8. Isaidso on August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm

Some posters on here haven’t got a clue. United should NEVER pay 30 million for Berbatov, he is only worth 20 million if that. Fergie should NEVER cave in to Levy, let Berbatov go to Real Madrid. We won the PL and CL without him last year, and we will do the same again if all our present players stay fit. Spurs are going nowhere, with or without Pavyluchenko. They couldn’t even afford the other forwards they needed, so Pot calling Kettle black I think. If United wanted him that desperately, they would have paid the money, but they are not that desperate. Viva Man United and Fergie. Spurs for the drop to championship.

  9. Robbie on August 28th, 2008 6:07 pm

Lets stick to facts rather than slagging another teams off.
Spurs think he’s worth 30 million and Man U don’t. If Man U did the deal would be done.
As for saying Spurs can’t afford other strikers, total rubbish they can afford anybody Man U can. The fact is that those players want to go to a recognised CL side (and yes Man U is one before you get out of your pram). If Spurs were in the CL then these players would want to come to Spurs as well.
Don’t be so arrogant in slagging off a team with ambition in trying to get a better team and challenging as high as they can in the PL.

Being a Tottenham fan I am quite aware of our shortfalls, but give a team credit for trying to hold on to a top player.

  10. Isaidso on August 28th, 2008 6:28 pm

Robbie, how the hell can spurs think he’s worth 30 million?. Dick Turpin Levy knows he isn’t worth that, and that is why he has not had any other clubs bidding big money for him. Even Real Madrid will only try him out on loan. I have nothing against Berba himself, I believe he is a good player, but NEVER a 30 million pound player. Tell Levy, the Man Utd coach just flashed by Sh*te Hart Lane, only called so because of the idiocy of Levy, and Levy couldn’t catch our financiers on the way past, in order to fleece them at gunpoint. So bye bye Berba, it would have been nice mate, but you will get CL football at Madrid. Something you’ll never get at Spurs. But then you know that.

  11. Pete on August 28th, 2008 6:44 pm

Isaidso you can say as much as you want. If Berbatov is only worth £20m and Utd don’t desperately want Berbatov then why don’t Rudolph the red nose just p*ss off and go and buy Huntelaar then? He can probably pick him up for less than £20m. Is it by any chance that Berbatov is a proven goal scorer in the PL and Huntelaar isn’t? That’s what you get for £20m. As for winning the PL and CL, Chelski were only 2 points behind you last season and you just about pipped them to the CL trophy too. As I remember rightly you lot were one kick away from losing it. They’ve brought in a world class manager and three world class players. You lot have brought in no one. That’s why fergie NEEDS Berbatov. Without him you can kiss the PL and CL goodbye!

  12. joker on August 28th, 2008 9:33 pm

Isaidso it is you that hasn’t got a clue.

it is easy to find out the respective financial postion of any pl club. off the top of my head utd are close to £700m in debt spurs have £0 debt.

Spurs are consistently in the top 15 richest clubs in europe and that is without the cash cow that is the champions league.

Spurs can buy whatever players they choose. Over the last 4 yrs only chelsea (not utd) have spent more money in the transfer market than spurs.

For utd to just be able to finance their debt they need to consistently win honours. Chelsea have considerably strengthened their squad and got a top class manager in place. You make out as if you easily won the pots you did last year. The facts are you just scraped both and if you don’t improve your playing staff you will win neither this year.

Berbatov is in the TOP 3 strikers in world football again the stats are freely available. He is better than all of the strikers currently on your books.

A quick comparison for you his international record is better than a goal every 2 games Tevez record is a goal every 6. One player plays for Bulgaria the other Argentina it doesn’t take a genius to work out which player is better. Berbatov’s league scoring ratio (at every club he has played for) is much better so if he is only worth £20m then Tevez must be worth £8?

The fact remains Utd need Berbatov and Spurs don’t need Utd’s borrowed money. So either Utf match our valuation and obtain a player they need or they don’t, and win nothing.
