Spurs are rumoured to be trying to leverage a bid from AC Milan or Barcelona for Dimitar Berbatov - in an effort to keep him from the clutches of Sir Alex Ferguson.
Milan, who have been on the lookout for a striker all summer have - for the time being - given up on their pursuit of Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor.
They are believed to have set a price cap of around £25 million on their new acquisition - precisely the price Spurs are willing to accept from a foreign side.
Spurs, who late last week furnished the FA with a dossier of complaints concerning alleged tapping up from United and Liverpool, are desperate to avoid selling Berbatov to fellow Premier League clubs - particularly United.
Earlier in the summer, uncorroborated reports suggested Spurs were willing to sell Berbatov to English clubs - but only for a £5 million premium - i.e. £5 million more than they would sell to a foreign club.
Should AC Milan make a bid they may have to fend off interest from Barcelona who are also keen to add new faces - but only if they can offload Cameroonian striker, Samuel Eto’o.
Cynics might sugguest Spurs’ position on avoiding selling to United is move motivated by resentment over the departure of Michael Carrick two summers ago.
Others (notably Liverpool fans) have argued - a specious argument as far as we’re concerned - that Ferguson is getting a taste of his own medicine, having refused to sell Gabriel Heinze to Liverpool last year.
