United fans - Who Do You Hate Most? Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal or Chelsea?

Chimps and Horses - Not the Best of Mates, Apparently…

Hate gets people worked up - we were reminded of that yesterday when we asked United fans whether they now despised Cristiano Ronaldo or were prepared to forgive the errant Portugeezer.

The poll we had on the site implied most people were prepared to forgive Ronaldo for his misdemeanours this summer - but ONLY if he bagged a hat trick against Liverpool.

That got us to thinking - who do we, as United fans, really hate most these days? I.e. Which team ?

Historically it’s been a no-brainer really - United have despised Liverpool fans with a righteous passion for decades. Their success in the 70’s and early 80’s was widely resented and United - and other English sides - never forgave them for the consequences of Heysel in the mid 80’s when English teams were banned from Europe.

The Scousers it has to be said hate us back with an equal passion - a passion that has only intensified with their failure to secure the domestic league crown for nigh on two decades.

Yes almost twenty years…fantastic isn’t it? Feel free to laugh.

If for a moment we take off our United-tinted specs - hard cuz we’ve had them on for about 30 years now - our passionate hatred of Liverpool (and theirs of us) seems somehow strange.

After all, many Scousers like us come from the same kind of stock historically - working-class, plenty of Irish amongst them and politically often of the same outlook.

Although we hate to admit it we probably have more in common with them (apart from the culinary penchant referred to in the JS Park song..) than we do - socio-demographically speaking, you understand - withCockneys, for example.

No disrespect intended to any Cockney Reds out there, certainly not old skool ones.

No doubt, some smart-arse Gooner will now deposit some - “well all your fans are from London and Torquay” horse-cack in the comment box, perpetuating one of the great canards of our time.

United’s dislike of Arsenal has grown exponentially over the past twenty years from the first great battle of Old Trafford in 1990 when a nasty spat between Brian McClair and Nigel Winterburn descended into a 20 man nightclub-style brawl.

Countless incidents have followed over the years such as:

- Vieira and Keane in the tunnel at the Library.
- Neo-Neanderthal Martin Keown goading Ruud after his squandered penalty and Vieira’s sending off in 2003 (with Cesc Fabregas as chief Pizza tosser.)
- William Gallas kicking lumps out of Nani for showing up the Gunners gutless FA Cup performance earlier this year at Old Trafford.

(”We’ll race you back to London…” those witty Londoners sang (again…Zzzz) during that match. Yeah - you’ll race us back to London with your tails between your legs…)

And then there’s Chelsea.

Of course we sort of hate Chelsea - as any sane person would - and are at the same time grateful to them.

Why grateful? - Because they have taken onto themselves so much of the hate that was previously directed at us. ABUs used to harp on about United’s money and power and its pernicious influence on the game and then along came Roman Abramovich and made an absolute mockery of that notion.

The absolute corrupting power of money to destroy the finer traditions of the game ? You’d have to try hard to come up with a more absurdly villainous scenario than the one that maintains at Chelsea these days.

And of course there was wind-up merchant Mourinho and there still is John Terry - the archetypal Barking thug and Champions League loser.

Finally what of City? We’d almost forgotten them.

I think its fair to say that the feeling of many United fans towards the Bitters is not one of hate - so much as pity.

With a bit of sniggering hilarity thrown in….

What do you reckon?

  2. bandler on July 31st, 2008 10:32 am

Personally I can’t fookin stand Arsenal - i’ve never met a Gooner fan who wasn;t anything other than arrogant and blinkered and almost religiously convinced on his teams superiority -apart from the fact that they haven;t won the league for 4/5 years and fugged up the cl final.

Haeting scousers goes without saying tho

As United fans, we’ve got to look at ourselves and acknowledge that there are some horrible scumbags amongst us. You see them everywhere, shopping centres, job centres - all ugly to a man and rarely with two brain cells to rub together.

  6. Dicky on July 31st, 2008 10:59 am

Ricky is that a wind up pal? Two brain cells? - that’s two more than you get down the other end of the East Lancs…

Most of you vermin are from Torquay or London anyway.

  10. Moray on July 31st, 2008 11:06 am

Similar, yes. Big difference is that many Liverpool fans are actually from Liverpool…

  11. Moray on July 31st, 2008 11:07 am

    yes - I’m a smart arse gooner!

  12. Dex on July 31st, 2008 11:07 am

Seriously how can any of you forgive that portugese twat, After already forgiving him barely for his antics against Rooney he has now basically admitted that he doesn’t want to play for Man U and they are a stepping stone to bigger things. If he stays then he will be wishing he was somewhere else and is he goes then Chelsea will win the title by miles because it was too close last year before you take away Ronaldo’s goals, without Ronny Chelsea will win.

  13. Moray on July 31st, 2008 11:08 am

yes - I’m a smart arse gooner! Just had to prove you correct.

  14. northern monkeys on July 31st, 2008 11:10 am

what part of the south coast are you from?
dont you realise how hated you guys are? we handle ourselves with class, dont tap up unliek you scum and then bitch about how Real (who are a bigger club) are tapping up your players…manUre fans make me feel like i need a bath afterwards. DIRT

  15. CockneyTw*t on July 31st, 2008 11:18 am

Arsenal fans - most of them are middle-class mummy’s boy accountant types who think going down the football makes them street. Nobheds!

  16. Sue on July 31st, 2008 11:21 am

Trouble is Utd fans are very fickle and two faced…..slat Ronaldo for doing the business on Rooney….then its all lovey dovey. Same will happen again in the new season mark my words.

  17. Avinash M. on July 31st, 2008 11:21 am

    Hi,

    I am a Liverpool fan.

I’m not sure you’ll agree with me but, alongside some knowledgeable (and, ahem, nice) Manchester United fans, there are a lot of completely clueless self-proclaimed die-hards (Roy Keane called them shrimp-eaters I think) who know (and understand) nothing of football… they are only fans because of the glitter.

  18. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 11:22 am

Dont forget the match were you ended our winning/unbeaten run by cheating/diving/acting and a huge dose of help from your 12th man, i mean ref, or the match were the neville sisters kicked 7 shades of cack out of Reyes! Although you did mention the penalty incident involving Keown and RVN, incidentally it was a dive that won that penaly also.Convieniently left out a few didn’t we?

Lets face it, If your fans are prepared to support Ronaldo after the way he kicked dort in your facesm, it shows the levels you as fans on the whole have sunk to.
Adebayor is going to get slaughtered on his first Emirates run out, Ronaldo deserves nothing more than a good hard slap for being a total kunt! Slave? Tsk tsk!

  19. Vinny on July 31st, 2008 11:23 am

Shrimp-eaters Avinash? - I think you mean prawn sandiwch brigade, mate

  20. bertie on July 31st, 2008 11:27 am

Liverpool. Hate them basically because they hate us with a passion. As they are not serious title challengers they don’t bother me as much as before. The disrespect their fans show to things like Munich memorials etc. is very poor though.

Man City. Not really a city hater (apart from when they beat us, which is effin annoying :))

Arsenal. A bit too smug for a team that has won nothing for a few years. It bugs me that people say they play the best football, even last season. Sure they’re ok but I thought we played better over the course of last season. Some of our attacking play was unbelievable.

Chelsea. Utter scum. What a bunch of moaning, cheating, chip on shoulder, out-of-control thug mercenaries. There isn’t a player on their team I would want to play for Man Utd apart from possibly Essien who seems a fairly decent fella. It’s not because of ability levels etc., its because of their attitude. It stinks down to a man apart from maybe Essien and Cech. I think they had a nucleus of the problem there already but it was really Mourinho who has helped push them so strongly down that path.

Shame I can’t see the poll results to see if folk agree.

  21. Vinny on July 31st, 2008 11:27 am

LondonGooner - support Ronaldo? I think you’ll find most proper UNited fans (not the daytrippers and Japanese girls) can’t ‘kin stand the pr*ck. When he does run out for United - probably in October - he’ll get absolutely battered. ONly a massive act of humilty - unlilkely - is going to win back any kind of respect

Moray on July 31st, 2008 11:06 am ”Similar, yes. Big difference is that many Liverpool fans are actually from Liverpool…”

I dont believe where you are from matters. The fact is that United are noticed by people all around the world with the style of football that they admire. It actually is a shame that you lot cant impress anyone outside of your hometown with your football. So what if alot of United fans arent from Manchester? It only shows that they are good enough to win fans from all over the world unlike your boring lot…

  23. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 11:31 am

Vinny - I hope you’re fans rip him a new arsehole, the greasy little shit stain deserves it for the way he has treated the club, the fans and the manager. Adebayor has done the same thing, only difference is no kunt is interested in him! LOL

  24. john wayne on July 31st, 2008 11:32 am

just been past the theatre of flashlights, many non-mancs outside posing outside the club shop…. p.s. do you do scampi as well as prawn sandwiches… fergie was right your fans are shite !

bertie if you go the games you must hear at every game murders!!murders!! murders!! even when you playing spurs or bolton you till chant about hillsborough so you cannot say anythink about liverpool fans disrespect.

“Liverpool. Hate them basically because they hate us with a passion. As they are not serious title challengers they don’t bother me as much as before. The disrespect their fans show to things like Munich memorials etc. is very poor though.”

    OI OI!

  27. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 11:43 am

Bertie you’re talking bollox mate! Arsenal DO play the best football in the country, Man Utd have an excellent attacking style but it is very direct (not in the long ball sense) and aggressive, our’s is much mor eintricate and harder to master!

Arsenal fans aren’t smug, we are generally quite knowledgable and appreciate teams like Man utd and the way they play the game. Rivals or not!

As for ChelskiSibneftDynamos - Complete scum, chav johnny-come-latelys who don’t deserve the steam off my pi**! Essien is a proper scummer, look at the career ending tackles he makes on a regular basis. Nice guy? You must be joking!

  28. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 11:49 am

LOL @ Harold Shipman, different class!

  29. johnnyc on July 31st, 2008 11:49 am

Enough is enough Man U fans, was once one myself, but i cant stand the way you despise all others just because of your success. The way Man U fans behave is RUBBISH now, compared to in the past. ~newly converted Gooner! Love the Arsene Way of Football. Make it Happen!

  30. Vinny on July 31st, 2008 11:53 am

johnnyyc - was a UNited fan once. Sunshine it doesn’t work like that. You pick your team when yer a kiddo - or you Dad does or your mad uncle Bert - and that’s it: you stick with em. No matter whether they’re sh*te or not. Just thank your lucky stars u picked UNited. Ignore all of the dikhed fans and watch the footie, mate - as good as anything in this country, including the Wenger pointless-pass-masters

  31. johnnyc on July 31st, 2008 11:58 am

nah. fellow united fans around have pissed me off more than fans of any other team over the years. don’t like the fact that we piss on others when we are successful, and give no regard to them. pretty much despicable in my eyes, and im disgusted. supporting your team should never be ilke that. I don’t wish for them to fail, but im never gonna support Man U again!

  32. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 12:01 pm

Vinny - When you spend £100 million in two season you should be playing good football, it’s nothing to boast about with that outlay! Chelski and Liverpool should hang there collective heads in shame at the suicide inducing quality of football they play! A disgrace to the norf and to the south!

I wouldn’t say pointless pass masters as aside from some dodgy finishing, and apoor free kick decision from the ref we showed you how to play the beautiful game in front of your own fans, fact!

  33. Harold Shipman on July 31st, 2008 12:02 pm

  35. admin on July 31st, 2008 12:08 pm

Ladies - you’ve probably noticed that pretty much anything goes here but we do draw the line at references to plane crashes and deaths in football grounds, alright?

And if you do want to swear - fair enough - just be clever enough to beat the spam filter.

As to the duh-brain who parped on about UNited’s “non-existent” youth policy - i ask this - how does United’s policy of taking advantage of unsatisfactory contractual arrangements for European and African teenagers differ in any substantial way from Arsenal’s youth policy? We’re all nicking foreign teens - oh and good luck with Ramsey….poor lad could have had a stellar career…

Remind me again how many English/British players regularly turn out for you guys again?

  36. mliwa on July 31st, 2008 12:10 pm

I hate Liverpool with all my might! Them so very proud.every year they shout ‘this is our year! Yet they know that they will never again take the premier.

  37. JPF on July 31st, 2008 12:17 pm

Got to be Liverpool, but at least you can have a bit of banter with them. Arse fans are just one eyed, biased no mark knob heads, who, generally, know dick all about football and only started supported them when Henry was ‘The best player in the world’.

  38. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 12:23 pm

Because you pay £20 million for the youngsters you poach and shout about it in the newpapers and your own websites befor ethey even signed and then look like right prats, we don’t!
Anderson, Nani, Rooney etc! and they are generally a bit older than the ones we pick up and polish! And you have to admit the Man utd production line is very bare at the minute most of the young players coming through your ranks wouldn’t hack it in the Championship, painful but true!!

  39. Seddo on July 31st, 2008 12:27 pm

    Milwa,

    Good command of English mate.
Where are you from again? Oh that’s right. You’re a Man Utd fan. Africa, or China then.
Me a liverpool fan. Me want to win league. Them Utd scum. Me hate them

  40. JAY on July 31st, 2008 12:33 pm

I think I speak on behalf of many Liverpool supporters who have half a brain cell that the relationship between Liverpool and Man U is complicated, it is one that I would like to keep and grow into more of a friendly banter than a hatred. It’s a bit like England vs. Germany.

I know that i’m going to get alot of negative responses to this but it will only prove to myself more that so called diehards on any side have got blinders on that only obscure truths.

At the end of the day Arsenal and Chesea would love to have history like us and try there hardest as do the media to produce this history. Every club has tried to reach the success of Liverpool and it is only Man U who have achieved this, so hats off credit where credit is due. Now that we are nearly even in success I hope this spurs both clubs on for success that can only be possitive. Man U need a great rival anyone who is smart enough knows that when your at the top you need to be pushed you need the hunger. I would like our rivalry to be like Real Madrid and Barcelona rather than Rangers and Celtic.

  41. Vinny on July 31st, 2008 12:38 pm

Seddo - yes mate we have fans from all around the world because of our attractive football and record of success in recent decades. Hardly surprising is it really…?

  42. Rin on July 31st, 2008 12:47 pm

fans around the world who only don the top but know nuts about Man U. Embarrassing too all! MansuckyU

  43. Avril on July 31st, 2008 12:48 pm

Yeah im a manchester city fan but im not going to go on about my hate for untied which has been there for many years. Because us blues are blues from birth we dont just seem to jump on the band wagon of whos won what every trophey

though before you jump on my back i argee with the liverpool fan up there that send liverpool fans are actally from liverpool its the same with city fans we are actally from manchester, and hold are club so close to our hearts.

everyones different , and before you go on about other supports rub two brain cells together and look at the state of some of your fellow untied fans

    apart from that

    well done on last season

and i look forward to seeing you loose to us once more

  44. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 12:54 pm

JAY on July 31st, 2008 12:33 pm - Typical Bin dippers comment!
You have a bloody cheek putting Chelsea in the same bracket as Arsenal, we have history we have trophies. Arsenal’s history is better than all bar two and even then it’s comparable if only for the CL/Eurpean cups we don’t have! Ill thought out, comments like yours are what gets peoples tits in a twist! Barcelona and Real MAdrid hate each other at a religeous level. Spain invaded/took over Catalunya years ago and claimed it as there territory, Madrid are the capitals team, Barcelona are the Catalunyan team, they hate each other as much as Celtic and Rangers (with the difference being they actually have good teams and don’t play in a Mickey Mouse league), only an idiot wouldn’t know that!

    London Gooner

    - you muppet !!!

You are everything a proper gooner should be - bitter and living in the past.

THE BEST FOOTBALL IN THE PREM - ( I gotta rest, my guts are hurtin )

I can’t wait to see the launching of the gooner book of excuses for the new season - I’m sure it won’t have lost any of the sharpness already attained in the previous years - real quality!

keep playing the best football and winning nothing - funny how that works wouldn’t you say ?

    Best in the prem ?

You’re not even the best in London - we are

    ask your captain…..

  46. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 1:03 pm

Anonymous on July 31st, 2008 12:56 pm - I gather you are a chav johnny come lately chelskiSibneftDynamo fan then? From your literacy and complete lack of knowledge that much is obvious. Book of excuses? I don’t think so, you won how many more trophies than us last season? Ah thats right, you took “bottling it” to a new level. Whilste spending £300 million over the preceding years with nothing to show for it except a lovely hotel attached to a rather large sh*t hole in West London. Nice area, shame about than football club.
And for all that money you spent your team still can only hoof the ball 80 yards for Drogba to knock on!? Must be nice having to watch that every season, thrilling even! When we won nothing last season, atleast we had some great football to satisfy us, what did you have? As for living in the past, well, i’d like to point to our shiney new stadium, the youngest competitive squad in Europe and the most astute forward thinking manager in European football, with a managed debt and the second highest level of income in England and 3rd in Europe, soon to be the first! Never mind, you’ll enjoy watching all that quality football from your team full of £100k per week earners!…………

I think the Man Utd Arsenal rivalry has died down since the Chavs bought there way onto the scene and Keane and Viera left thier respective clubs!

admin on July 31st, 2008 12:08 pm - Remind me again how many English/British players regularly turn out for you guys again?

Remind me again how many turn out for you that you haven’t bought for rediculous sums of money? Carrick £18 million, Rooney £30 million, Ferdinand £28 million, Hargreaves £18 million and so on and so on.
Now I’m sure it must mean an awful lot to you guys to have such classy guys playing for your team, but if we had a spare £94 million lying around we spend it on our debt AND our team, instead of leaving an £800 million + debt rack up against our club…..that would be foolish wouldn’t it….oh dear!

  50. Another damn Gooner on July 31st, 2008 1:14 pm

Jay we would love Liverpool’s and Utd’s history?Well done but no thanks, we have our own and are quite proud of it. Obviously we would love your haul of European cups but I don’t think you’ll find one Arsenal fan who is not proud of our club’s history. We’re quite proud of the city we are from and what we are.
As for fans I hate the most? I generally hate moronic football fans of ANY club who come up with this kind of shit. I used to really not like Utd but have grown to like them since Chelsea got good. I generally like/dislike clubs and the way the play football. For example I used to really enjoy watching Liverpool in the 80s and early 90s but now they bore me, as do Chelsea.
I’ve always found Leeds/Chelsea fans to have some of the most unpleasant amongst their ranks but then have plenty of Chelsea supporting mates (as well as plenty of London born and bred Liverpool and Utd fans and that annoys me).
I like to watch Utd, I love the game I’m not interested in petty hatred. There are Gooners I hear at the Emirates chatting shit who I dislike just as much as any other moron from any other football club. All you saddos get a life!!!!

  51. admin on July 31st, 2008 1:15 pm

LondonGooner - fair point. United are cajoled into doling out daft money for these players - Anyone who peeps under the surface of our finances would find a proper horroshow.

Better just hope that dipsh*t Blatter never gets his way on home player quotas tho

  52. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 1:25 pm

admin on July 31st, 2008 1:15 pm - The Glaziers have been very clever with the debt, placing it against Man Utd instead of themselves. As it stands, Man Utd havent once made the full payment on the interest alone, which is worrying as when the Glaziers sell up whomever buys it will need to clear that debt and find the cost of buying them. Which could mean the club is asset stripped (a very real possibility)! The sdame goes for Chelski to, Abramovich has a 12 month loan recall option and as it stands that is about £300 million which would mean bye bye Chelski (not many tears would be shed i’m sure)

If Blatter gets his way, we could be in real trouble LOL Does France count as Britain, it’s as close as Northern Ireland is?! We are lucky though that players like Randall, Wiltshere, Walcott and a few others like Fabregas will count as Home grown, Clichy also! As i think they cannot base it on nationality against EU rules, but they can say homegrown or not, which would save our bacon!!! Teams such as Chelsea would then struggle as thier strategy is about purchasing rather than developing!

  53. Steve on July 31st, 2008 4:10 pm

When will you people realise that we’re all in the same boat? We’re paying fortunes for these pricks that have no regard for our club and loving them for the honour of donning our team’s colours. In return my club (Arsenal) charge me over 1k a year for the distinction of cheering an over-paid bunch of primma-donnas in an ‘arena’ that is as far removed from a football stadium as you could have the misfortune to encounter. Best though thaty we all bitch amongst ourselves on who we dislike the most. Society is so untroubled.

  54. LondonGooner on July 31st, 2008 5:17 pm

Steve - Strange notion that, I think the emirates is a superb stadium. Ah, I’ve just realised you must of preferred pi**ing down a rolled up newspaper and getting legionaires from some dodgy “meat” pie in cramped stands………………………..! The good old days eh?

  55. Pk7 on July 31st, 2008 7:36 pm

In order of dislike(note rating is based on the annoyingness of fans)

    Arsenal
    Liverpool
    City
Chelsea…there aren’t much of them anyway and most can’t even use the computer, so probably why they annoy me the less

  56. Pk7 on July 31st, 2008 7:41 pm

To Johnny c: newly converted gooner? I guess you were never a true United fan then…glad you switched sides, we’d rather have fewer fans who support with their heart than club hoppers. And most United fans don’t despise anyone because of our success, we’ll show respect to other clubs when we’re shown some.

“Hate” is a very mild word to describe what I feel about LFC. I “Detest” them and I think that they are the most “Grotesque” team in the whole league. I know that other footballers from other teams are not saints of any kind, but at least they own up to the bull… that they do when they are out on the field. In the case of Liverpool I must say:

    1. If Liverpool is down on goals in a particular game, then the players from Liverpool are allowed to express their frustration. I mean they can shove, challenge dangerously, kick the ball in frustration once the whistle has been blown by the ref calling some foul…. I mean these are very well acceptable by the fans. But if another team were to do the same if they were down on goals against Liverpool.. thats sacrilage. They are playing rough.

    2. Barclay’s Premier League Teams… Please note the fact that if Steven Gerard is in the penalty area with the ball…you must let him score cos if you do challenge him… its a penalty mate!!!! And moreover Raffa will stand on the side line and actually will comment to the media, which reaches out to millions of people world wide, who have eyes by-the-way.. that the penalty is justified!!! So watch it!!

    3. Guys please face the facts. Liverpool players don’t dive. No No No… they just fall to the ground to get some rest thats all.. you see after working so hard for 85 minutes a man is entitled to his rest in the penalty area of the opposite team. Come on … let’s be a little understanding here.

    4. To make things even better for Liverpool, I think lady luck is a scouser….cos in this season of 2008/2009…..there has been an incident supporting liverpool in almost every game… either someone gets sent out … or there is a dubious penalty.. better still I think teams playing against Liverpool… particularly in Anfield… should send in 12 guys … cos at least that way the refs can get their itch of sending them out and we can still have a normal game.

The entire game of Liverpool is a Liverfluke. I am sure that the lily liver or whatever the hell bird that is used as a symbol for LFC is repenting for being used there. Pity the poor creature of GOD!!

Liverpool is horrible, hypocritic and disgusting football team and its a sham.
