As United boss Sir Alex Ferguson frets about his dwindling strike options, forgotten man Dong Fang Zhuo gave him a reminder of what he might be missing out on, scoring for China in their 1-1 draw with New Zealand at the Olympics.
Dong, who signed for United in 2004 and spent two seasons in Belgium with Antwerp before finally securing a work permit for the Reds in 2006, has mustered just three first team appearances for United.
After spending his footballing career to date in inferior leagues and the United reserves, Dong has finally got the chance to enjoy some footballing limelight representing the host nation in this year’s Olympics.
He came off the bench to secure a precious point for the hosts against ten-man New Zealand, scoring a clever looped header on 88 minutes.
Next up for China is Belgium On Sunday and then Brazil next Wednesday - when Dong could line up against club colleague Anderson-son-son…
Who knows - maybe Dong might even get a sniff of fist team action on his return from the Games? Then again…
