Where’s Berbatov? Manucho To Deputise?

Following his second minute assist for Carlos Tevez at Anfield on Saturday, Dimitar Berbatov might have been forgiven for thinking he was due a dream debut.

Things soured pretty rapidly for United, however, and Berbatov had to settle for seeing out his debut with a bitter defeat to our most despised rivals.

No doubt, therefore, he’ll be ultra-keen to make amends and show United fans tomorrow night exactly what £32 million buys you in terms of attacking talent. The advantage of a stepping out this time on a stirring Old Trafford night and the pace of European football should work in his favour.

But will he even play?

According to the spies over at Carrington, Berbatov did not appear at all during the Monday training session. The Bulgarian saw out the full 90 minutes at Anfield but did take a knock on his knee. It may simply, therefore, be a case of cautiousness on United’s part to examine that knock before committing him to training ahead of the Villareal game. Here’s hoping he puts in an appearance.

However, if Berbatov doesn’t make it for whatever reason we may see Manucho make his first team debut. The Angolan striker finally secured his work permit last month and has now fully recovered from a metatarsal injury.

Joining him on the bench could be that boy Ronaldo, who himself has recovered from his ankle surgery and has returned to full training. Ronaldo is expected to get a brief run out on Wednesday and start the must-win (or perhaps must-not-lose) league fixture at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.
