Who’s telling lies? Fergie or The Sun?

In the internet age where it is possible, and indeed inevitable, that news stories are spun out of mere scraps of truth and ‘embellished’ beyond all recognition, we’ve all grown accustomed to taking sporting scoops with a pinch of salt.
Nonetheless, you expect a national newspaper to display more journalistic rigour than say (no mea culpa) - a fan blog.
So, when The Sun broke the story on Friday about Sir Alex Ferguson confirming a bid for Berbatov, it lit the fuse for a thousand copycat stories and blog posts.
The Sun story quoted Ferguson at length. Here’s the quote in full as it appeared in the original article:
“We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through.”
“Berbatov has been impressive for a long time and he would be a great addition to our attack.”
Tottenham appear resigned to losing the 27-year-old who has been a huge success since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2006 but would want a fee of around 25 million pounds.
“I think time will work for us more than against us,” Ferguson said. “We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.”
Whilst Ferguson’s comments could hardly be considered a full interview, they are at substantive enough to be considered genuine.
Or are they?
Astonishingly, Ferguson this afternoon denied ever having uttered those words and said on the matter:
“I don’t know where they got those quotes from, it wasn’t from me.
“It is going to be very embarrassing for them - but you know what Daniel Levy is like. He is different.”
“It’s something to ask David Gill about because I haven’t really spoken to him about it today because I’ve been preparing for the match.”
“I haven’t read it, but I’m sure our legal people will be looking at it before I do.”
So as far as Fergie is concerned The Sun story is a fabrication. Either he’s telling fibs or The Sun are. It makes no sense for Ferguson to put his knackers on the line by denying the quote, if he isn’t telling the truth one hundred percent.
To do that would be an act of sheer folly and the consequences grave indeed. Fergie has made some extremely foolish mistakes in the past (most notably in respect of racehorses) but we seriously doubt he’s pulling our legs on this one.
That means The Sun has a case to answer and Daniel Levy feels - what he very probably is - a complete prat.

I do think D.Levy has other evidence than just this article from The Sun.
